Voodoo Fishin' Beginner Guide: Your First Trip

Edited

Start Voodoo Fishin' by finishing the dock tutorial, checking the Journal, and taking a manageable catch to the Fish Monger. Match your reel’s depth and bait to the fish you want before buying stronger tackle. Death costs your catch and equipped gear, so an early trip should include a return to the dock.

Steam PC, 1.0 release context. Tutorial and fishing explanations come from earlier developer and player guides, reconciled with later Journal, cooler and shop updates; exact build not verified. Sources and scope.

Before leaving the starting dock

Finish the tutorial prompts before trying to rebind controls. The tutorial takes you through casting, hooking, fighting a fish, putting it in the cooler, carrying it to the seller, and finding the Journal. DruPon’s April player guide describes that sequence; later developer notes confirm that rebinding is unavailable before tutorial completion.

The Journal bookshelf is beside the outhouses where you spawn. Interact with it using E. After the Journal tutorial, J opens the Journal anywhere, so you do not need to return to that shelf for every fish check. The April 28 update added this shortcut and a small tutorial requirement.

Land a fish, then bring it back

Follow the casting and hooking prompts shown by your tutorial. During the fight, follow the directional arrow with the rod and use the fish’s pauses to reel; constantly winding against its movement can break a weak setup. This is the approach described in DruPon’s original player guide. The control table and hookset sequence explain the separate inputs and preset limits.

Put the landed catch in the cooler as the tutorial directs, carry it to the Fish Monger, and sell it there. E is the documented interaction key; G puts down the cooler. While holding the cooler, C opens its selection mode so you can take an item back out. See the cooler controls and reset warning before using any respawn option.

A catch increases the Journal’s caught record; the Fish Monger pays for fish by weight. The first useful endpoint is a completed tutorial and a sold catch, not a purchase of the most expensive bait.

Choose gear for the next fish

Rod Strength helps resist a hard pull, Rebound helps the rod recover between pulls, and Cast Distance affects how far bait launches. The reel controls line length and the water layer you fish. Bait supplies rarity access and preference tags. Changing one component does not replace the others.

Choose a fish in the Journal, match an appropriate depth with your reel, and look for bait tags the fish likes. More matched tags can help; the developer explicitly says a perfect match is not required. A reel covering two layers broadens the possible catch pool rather than guaranteeing a better chance for one species. The Journal field reference separates these clues.

Selling also contributes to a shared Dock Quota. Check the two Fish Mongers’ upcoming rewards before choosing a crew goal: Louis at Fort Arbre has a separate meter. Ordinary sales, a Bounty bonus, and a session upgrade serve different purposes; the money guide explains the distinction.

Avoid an expensive first mistake

Do not use high-tier bait as a substitute for a rod and reel that can handle its catch. The developer recommends improving Strength and Rebound before hunting Legendary fish. If a hooked line approaches its distance limit it glows red; that warning is different from finding the wrong habitat.

If you need to escape with the line in the water, G cuts it at the cost of the bait. When you die with the fishing rig visibly in hand, its rod, reel and bait can drop into the world. A Skull enchantment gives a rod or reel one loss-prevention use; it does not insure every item you carry.

After a loss, the current session’s Pawn Shop is a documented place to look for gear to buy back. Its stock comes from that session’s sold and permanently lost tackle, so do not assume a fresh lobby restores the old stock. Follow the recovery options before leaving.
