Voodoo Fishin' Fishing Controls and Reeling Help

Edited

In Voodoo Fishin', casting, setting the hook and reeling are three separate actions. With the default mouse setup, hold middle mouse to prepare the cast and release it as you flick the rod forward. When a fish bites, quickly swipe left or right to set the hook before using the reel. Scrolling as soon as the fish bites skips that hookset and can produce a Missed result.

PC controls: April binding reference and original tutorial footage, reconciled with developer hookset/reel replies from August and casting advice posted after the October 1.0 release. Controller presets and custom bindings vary. No input device was tested by this site. Sources and scope.

Check the binding and the selected input mode

Open Options and check Rebind before following a button list. The April control reference records the bindings below; it also offers different casting methods. A changed binding, or a tap-versus-hold reel mode, changes what you need to do. Finish the tutorial before expecting all rebinding options to be available.

For a controller that will not reel with L2, the developer’s August answer is to check whether Tap mode is enabled. Holding a trigger is not the same action as tapping it under that mode. Check the actual selection before replacing gear or changing unrelated settings.

Documented default/reference bindings; read the current Options screen if you changed a preset. Controller labels show Xbox / PlayStation.

Cast first, set the hook second, then fight the fish

On the default horizontal mouse method, the recorded tutorial tells the player to pull back to the right and flick left for the cast. Release the casting button as the rod goes forward. The developer repeated that timing advice in the October discussion. The vertical method is an option, so do not apply a horizontal movement instruction to a vertical preset.

Wait for the bite. The developer’s answer to a player repeatedly getting Missed is explicit: a quick left or right swipe sets the hook, and reeling comes afterward. A wheel movement by itself is not a hookset. Controller players also need the rod-movement hookset rather than only the reel trigger; the October reply identifies Hookset Sensitivity as the control to adjust when rod movement sets it off too easily.

After the hookset, follow the fish’s directional arrow with the rod. DruPon’s original guide explains that this movement helps prevent the line breaking, and recommends reeling during the fish’s pauses rather than winding continuously against every pull. Use the wheel or the controller reel binding in its selected mode.

The endpoint is the landed fish, not the bite or the first hook animation. Put it in the cooler and complete the return-and-sale part of the first-trip guide.

Read the failure before changing your setup

Use the stage at which the attempt fails to choose the next check. A missed bite happens before the fight; a red line happens during a fight. They are not interchangeable evidence of a weak rod.

Handle an input problem without confusing it with gear limits

For casts that always fall at the player’s feet, first compare the button release with the forward flick. In the October 14–16 discussion, the developer also asks for mouse model, DPI and Windows pointer settings, and asks whether a lower DPI or another mouse changes the result. Record those details with the exact symptom if timing checks do not help.

That discussion mentions a planned hotfix and says the team had not reproduced the report. A plan is not proof that a patch has shipped or that your particular problem is fixed. If only part of a small movement is ignored, use the input and connection branch rather than treating it as a low-FPS measurement.

The developer suggests resetting control settings if the controller binding/mode checks fail. Note your custom bindings first so you can restore them. This refers to controls, not clearing saves or resetting progression. One April player reports success after both changing sensitivity and switching to a wired mouse; the record does not isolate either change as a guaranteed cure.

Once input is working, gear limits are a separate decision. A starter rod’s short reach is expected, and the October balance changes mean that old price rankings are a poor substitute for the properties shown on your actual gear.
